Современный небольшой объем театра пристроен к великолепно сохранившемуся зданию бывшего городского училища (школы). В 1910–1912 годах после большого пожара в Новониколаевске по проекту и под руководством А. Крячкова построено 12 школьных зданий по схожим проектам. В дореволюционной России они считались лучшими.

В соответствии с канонами стиля в здании легко просматривается функциональное назначение его частей. Главный западный фасад где расположена парадная лестница с широкими и пологими ступенями, выходит на улицу Революции.

Училище было хорошо благоустроено: при отсутствии общегородского водопровода и канализации в нем внутренний водопровод и система центрального водяного отопления с котлами и отопительной арматурой, выписанной из Варшавы. Резервуар для воды размещали в башне с купольным покрытием.

Здание училища представляет большой интерес как одно из ранних произведений А. Крячкова, выполненных в стиле модерн и сохранивших свой первоначальный облик. В 1999 году к восточному фасаду училища был пристроен дополнительный объем, в котором, собственно, и расположился театр.

Проект театра выполнил новосибирский архитектор А. Михайлов, а витражи изготовлены по рисункам И. Ельченко. Мотив главного фасада в виде трех кукол-неваляшек ассоциируется с народной игрушкой, со скоморошьими представлениями, русским балаганом и сказкой. В театре есть музей кукол, кафе, комната сказок, игровой зал. Театр довольно популярен в городе, и на его спектакли практически не бывает свободных мест.
