С Красного проспекта, если взглянуть на север от Дома офицеров, открывается великолепный вид на главный собор Новосибирска. Построенный в 1913 году деревянный, небольшой, однопрестольный храм неоднократно достраивался и реконструировался. В 1924 году с образованием епархии Вознесенская церковь стала кафедральным собором. В 1937 году здание у верующих отобрали и устроили в нем зернохранилище. В 1944 году вернули, и вплоть до 1990-х годов собор оставался единственным действующим храмом города.

Современный вид (архитекторы В. Авксентюк и В. Фефелов) храм принял к юбилею Русской православной церкви — 1000-летию крещения Руси. Храм значительно подрос, из деревянного превратился в каменный.

С 1943 по 1956 годы Новосибирской епархией руководил митрополит Варфоломей, который не только был любим прихожанами, но был подвижником православной веры. После кончины Варфоломей захоронен в храме, его гробница находится в Серафимовском приделе. В соборе много чтимых икон: «Всех Святых, в земле Сибирской просиявших», святого Николая Чудотворца (с частицей мощей), великомученика Пантелеймона Целителя (с частицей мощей), преподобного Серафима Саровского (с частицей мощей), преподобного Амвросия Оптинского (с частицей мощей), святого Иннокентия Московского (с частицей мощей), Божией Матери «Живоносный источник». В 1998 году из Киево-Печерской лавры доставлены и помещены в раке частицы 96 святых. Среди них мощи Ильи Муромца и летописца Нестора.
