Инженер путей сообщения, известный писатель, путешественник. Весной 1891 года был назначен руководителем 5-й изыскательской партии на участке Челябинск-Обь Западно-Сибирской железной дороги. Ему приписывается выбор места строительства моста через Обь. В отличие от других инженеров-изыскателей, оставшихся на строительстве Сибирской железной дороги, в стройке не Участвовал и впервые увидел пос. Новониколаевский в 1898 году по пути в Корею, где собрал и впервые издал корейские сказки. Он хорошо известен как автор автобиографической тетралогии «Детство Темы», «Гимназисты», «Студенты» и «Инженеры», многих рассказов и очерков, в том числе и о Сибири.
